Display bug in Icedove to install extensions
Anonymous - over 3 years ago -
Hi everyone,
I tried to install a British English dictionary in Icedove for spelling check. However, when I intend to import the .xpi file, I can’t do it because the panel in the Add-ons menu doesn’t display properly (see attached screenshot). When clicking on the gear icon, the drop-down menu is empty.
At first, I thought it was my Icedove install which was buggy because I imported a .icedove profile from another GNU/Linux distribution. However, removing my configuration file, un-installing and re-installing Icedove and starting it without any settings exposed the same behaviour.

Just got the solution from the IRC channel. I post it here for future reference:
- Download the extension file (.xpi)
- Drag-and-drop the file from a file manager to the addons menu of the Icedove window
- Confirm the pop-up notification from Icedove to install the extension

what you described is not a solution, but a work-around - the
bug is still present
"trouble-shooting" is uncovering the root of a problem, when you
do not know exactly what the problem is yet - this section of the
forum is for when you need help doing that
often a bug is discovered in that process; then a bug report
should be opened for tracking the progress of a fix - in this
case, it was clearly a bug; so it could have been reported as a
bug to begin with
that menu does actually seem to work; but the text or graphic is
missing; which makes the "buttons" about 2 pixels thick

Al right, thank you for the explanation of this subtlety. I opened a ticket to reference the bug: Bug #2839: [icedove] 68.9.0-nonprism text missing in add-ons menu.
