HP Notebook Occasionally Does Not Shut All The Way Down

poisson-aerohead - 9 months ago -

I have been noticing an intermittent problem. Occasionally my laptop does not shut all the way down. Sometimes I catch it (I notice the small power light on the side or hear the fan still running), but it is difficult when I am often rushing at the end of the night or whatever because the screen goes dark and and the hard drive goes silent. I often unplug the AC adapter after shut down, so I will then notice at next boot, especially since I often press Power before plugging the barrel jack back in. I can then check the charge level after signing in and it will be basically dead.

I run a pretty light weight ship, so I shut down from the Linux terminal using 'sudo shutdown -h now'.

I'm sorry but there isn't much more I can say as I have not noticed a pattern yet. The machine does successfully shut down sometimes. If I notice it does not go all the way off (i.e. the fan is turning), I can hold power for 5 seconds to shut it all the way off. Obviously, that is not the real solution, as it should turn off on its own.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there something I can look for in the logs?
