Actually, Thunderbird 52.1.1 comes with Lightning 5.4.1 version, according to Mozilla Calendar release shedule.

In worst case scenario, you can use the Beta 1 of Lightning 5.5 for solve the issues that can generate the addon.

Lightning does not work for me either.
The binary component required for Lightning could not be loaded, likely because the wrong version combination is being used. You are using Icedove 52.1.1 together with Lightning 5.4. Please check https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Calendar/Calendar_Versions for details.

I have the same problem. Tried installing an older version and a newer version, but that didn't work out. Please tell me if you found a workaround!

I have rebuilt icedove with lightning integrated and will push soon, but I noticed the translation does not work. I'm looking into that, though.
UPDATE: I found a way to extract lightning locale data, and will integrate those into the icedove-l10n packages.

icedove / iceowl (lightning) combined build is up in libre/icedove-1:52.1.1-2;
icedove-l10n has been modified to include translations for iceowl in libre/icedove-l10n-*-1:52.1.1-2.

Thanks a bunch oaken-source, this last build solves the "binary component required" issue. From now on you should keep Lightning integrated into IceDove. This seem to be the new official way to do it. Arch is doing the same too.

dllud: yes, I've read this in the relevant issues of the thunderbird bug tracker, too.
I just wish they'd be a bit more vocal about these things in the release notes...
