Booting nomodeset on AMD GPU and new ISO's
hitman47 - about 3 years ago -
After a few months of being too busy i finally set again at booting Parabola
I ended up making the 5.7.10 LXDE ISO boot into the desktop, by reflashing the bios on my video card which seemingly was corrupted and typing the nomodeset parameter into grub.
Happy to see there is network, sound and everything on my rather typical hardware (Gygabyte motherboard, ryzen 2nd gen platform). The problem is the video. The resolution is stuck at 720p with no acceleration. There's this weird bug with openbox but i'm sure it's fixed upstream, iso is a few months old.
What do you suggest I do?
Install the 5.7.10 LXDE and set to update it? Or will there be a new Parabola ISO in the near future based on linux-libre 5.10/11?
What do I do with my video card?
It's an RX 570 so it works with the MESA driver, i think it's open source. How to make that work after installing?
Thank you

it is not important which ISO you use -any parabola LiveISO that
boots for you is perfectly adequate for every use-case
AFAIK, you should not need to do anything special - that graphics
device is listed on h-node as fully working with the ati driver
- just install the ati driver and upgrade the system
those ryzen computers have been particularly troublesome to
install parabola on - if you have any problems with the
installed system, we can try to get megver to help you
this issue seems to be similar to your original problem - not
suerm, the OP never confirmed the suggestions
https://labs.parabola.nu/issues/2703
this one suggest that the openrc ISO was the problematic for
ryzen computers, but that the system ISO worked

Thank you for the answer. I manually installed today Parabola systemd.
The system works fine so far, boots, is stable, but the video driver still won't load, only with nomodeset it boots
Attached below is the error I get from dmesg (something about the driver being non free?) and my installed video packages which are xf86-video-amdgpu and mesa
I'm a bit of a beginner so I might have missed a config somewhere.
EDIT: I added in grub modprobe.blacklist=amdgpu and the system will also boot.
I installed AMDVLK which is supposedly 100% open source, from here i have few ideas how to make that work

Hi, I am not sure, but I think that by setting nomodeset
will disable any AMDGPU from the Linux kernel. Look at this for some hints: https://labs.parabola.nu/issues/2816#note-25 . If you are not using encryption on your hard-drive, you may still be able to get some portions of AMDGPU (not the video acceleration) without much trouble. You will however not be able to see the booting messages.
